A Day in the Life of a Diagnostic Radiographer

Hi, I am a student in Diagnostic Imaging. When I get my diploma, I would be able to work in hospitals or clinics as a radiographer. This job offers a lot of specialties as traditional X-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and more. This is why every day in this field is different. Also, you never know who's going to show into your exam room and that's make every day so special. I choose this article of the University Health Broad because it gives a good explanation  that each day in the life of a Radiographer is never the same.

Most of the patients are going to go in the Radiology department during their visit at the hospital and see a Diagnostic Imaging technologist. His job is to take the best images as possible of the human body using different devices in order to the radiologist give the best diagnosis he can. The Radiology technologist is trained in multiple areas so that he's able to manipulate the devices and understand what he is doing. A Radiographer can work in X-rays, fluoroscopy, CT scans, MRI scans, angiography, ultrasonography and more. The biggest area of work for Radiographers is X-rays because it count for about 70-80% of all exams. Diagnostic technologist will x-ray patients who might be intern (who's already in the hospital) or extern (who comes only for his exam). In some cases, the technologist might take the portable X-ray machine to go in the bedroom of a patient who is too ill to move into the exam room. Another special case is when the Radiographer go into the surgery room to assist the surgeon and takes radiography of the patient during the operation. Something that most of radiographer likes is the human contact with the patient. The feeling of helping someone to recover is really nice. Thereafter, every day on this job is different and you are learning new things each day. You never know what is going to happen when you arrive in the morning, this job is so unpredictable. Sometimes you need to use your imagination to think about the best way to place the patient for the X-ray because they can't place themself in the good position due to their injuries.
In Quebec, to become a Radiographer, you need to go to College and get your diploma in Diagnostic Imaging. With some experience, you can specialize in other areas like MRI or ultrasonography and more.

Glossary of Terms for Medical Imaging

I am now studying in Medical Imaging at Ahuntsic College. Sometimes it can be difficult for other poeple to understand some words used in this environment. So, this is why I made this little glossary with words usually use in this field of study.

X-Ray
This is a type of imaging technique that uses electromagnetic radiation of extremely short          wavelength to generate pictures of inside the human body.

Ultrasonography
a radiologic technique in which deep structures of the body are visualized by recording the reflections (echoes) of ultrasonic waves directed into the tissues.

Mammography
An examination method using x-rays to detect cancer in the breast.

Magnetic Resonance
An imaging technique used to visualise the soft tissue inside your body. MRI combines a powerful magnet with radio-frequency pulses. These collect signals that are then processed by a sophisticated computer to form pictures of the inside of your body.

Computed Tomography
Imaging technique used to visualise both the soft tissue and bone inside your body. CT uses special x-rays to obtain image data from different angles around the body. A powerful   computer is then used to process the information to show a cross-section of body tissues and organs.

Radiation
The radioactivity comes from the breakdown of atoms. The source can be natural or made in a nuclear reactor. Uncontrolled radiation can be dangerous and cause cancer. Controlled exposure to radiation can be used in medicine for diagnosis.

Fracture
A fracture is a complete or incomplete break in a bone.

Dosimeter
A device carried on the person for measuring the quantity of ionizing radiation to which one has been exposed.

Contrast medium
Substance given to the patient, either through a drink or injection, to help areas of the body show up more clearly during a scan.

Pathology
The branch of medicine that deals with laboratory examination of samples of body tissue for diagnostic and forensic purposes
Radiological protection
It is the science and practice of protecting people and the environment from the harmful effect of ionizing radiation.

Compensating Filter
A device, such as a wedge of aluminum, clay, or plastic, that is placed over a body area during radiography to compensate for differences in radiopacity.

Ultrasound transducer
A device that produces sound waves that bounce off body tissues and make echoes. The transducer also receives the echoes and sends them to a computer that uses them to create a picture called a sonogram.

Interventional Radiology
A specialised area of radiology that uses various imaging techniques to guide the insertion of small instruments and tools through the body to identify and treat a medical disorder without requiring conventional surgery.

5 Reasons to Become a Diagnostic Radiology Technologist

File:Dysplasie de hanche - mère saine.jpg
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dysplasie_de_hanche_-_m%C3%A8re_saine.jpg?uselang=fr

Hi, my name is Anouk and I live in Quebec. I'm starting my second year in Diagnostic Imaging program at  Ahuntsic College. This program takes three years to complete  and include a complete year of internship in a hospital. After that, I'll get a diploma that confirms that I have the required skills  to become a diagnostic radiology technologist. I'm sure that you are wondering what is a diagnostic radiology technologist ? Well, basically, it's the person who' s manipulating X-rays, takes care of the patient and analysis the images to make sure that they are great enough so the radiologist can place a diagnostic. Now, I'll give you five reasons for YOU to become an imaging technician.

1.  You can decide where you want to work

Something nice with becoming a technologist in Diagnostic Imaging  is that you can choose the environment where you want to work. If you want a routine and having a regular schedule, you can work in a clinic. On the opposite, if you prefer to work at different times of the day, you like unexpected events and action, your place is definitely in a hospital.  There's also jobs in selling X-ray machines or make the maintenance of those machines. You can even work as a teacher or lab technician at  Ahuntsic College. Something nice with working at the school is that you can convey your knowledge to the students and have fun with them while they are learning new stuff about your passion.

2.  You can help people

The Diagnostic Imaging technician is an important part of the process to find out the diseases or the problems of a patient. Thanks to radiographies, the radiologist is able to make a diagnostic and treat them. Our job is to prepare the exam room before the patient's arrival like : preparing the constrast medium and the needle if we need to do an injection. The preparation varies with the type of exam that you are working in. Also, our job is to take care and reassures the patient during all the exam. Without us, the radiologist wouldn't be able to find out the problem of the patient.

3. You can choose your specialty

Something really cool with this job is that you can choose a specialty. In fact, the world of medical imaging is a big world. This job offers yous several opportunities. You can specialize in scan, ultrasonography, mammography or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). For most of those specialties, you would need to do an AEC of approximately 1 year at Ahuntsic College. With this second diploma, you will be able to do all the exams in this field and be good at it.

If you have a real motivation and your really love this field, you can go to the university to become a doctor in radiology witch is a radiologist. This job is one of the most highest-paid in the hospital. But, you need to be really passionate by the world of medical imaging because  this job requires a lot of  study and skills.

4. You learn a lot about human body

If human body is one of your principal interests and you love to learn new things about your anatomy, this job is made  for you ! Indeed, during your years in the college, you will learn a lot about bones, organs and their localisation and how your body works in a general. You will also learn new things about pharmaceuticals, how to make an injection and how to move a patient.  So, if you have many skills and interest in biology : Go for it !

5. You make money

Well, we all know that money is important  in this world. As you already know, the program in college is only three years. This means that as soon as you get your diploma, you can work at the hospital or clinic and you are already earning a good wage. Also, working conditions are normally very good, especially in the hospital.

In the end, you should definitely choose this program because of the many employment opportunities in various places, you are having a great human contact by helping others, you can choose a special field, you learn a lot about biology and you earn a great wage from the beginning. What are you waiting to apply ?
